This idiom can be defined as the ability to relax, to take time out of one’s busy schedule to enjoy or appreciate the beauty of life. But have you ever stopped to think about just what smelling a rose can do in your life?

In botany, as in aromatherapy, Rose (Rosa x damascena) is often referred to as “the queen of flowers.” Is this because the rose is hard to grow, temperamental even? Is it because the petals hold so little essential oil that it is perhaps the most precious of all essential oils?

In my opinion as a clinical aromatherapist, I would say it is because of the profound effect the rose essential oil can have on every aspect of your life. Physically, it is anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic and balancing to the hormones (especially female!). Mentally, it is calming to the central nervous system as well as an anti-depressant. And emotionally—this is where I think the rose takes on its “royal” status—it lends comfort to those grieving or experiencing heartache.

These attributes sound amazing, don’t they? But are you wondering how you can afford to own a blend containing this powerful oil, knowing the essential oil is wildly expensive? Well, the good news is because of its high potency (which also translates to powerful scent), a very little amount of the Rosa x damascena is needed in any blend. (By the way, using the less expensive Rose absolute is not going to lend the same therapeutics as the essential oil—but will still smell amazing.)

So while we already consider the rose as a wonderful diversion, and a meaningful way to show someone our love (did I mention it’s also an aphrodisiac?), next time you stop to smell a rose, consider the magnificent power it can lend us—body, mind, and heart.
